“I have to have been there. I just can’t get up and sing something. I have to sing music that I can relate to, then I can give all of me. With gospel, you have to sing from your heart. You have to be honest, truthful, because you just can’t sing gospel without giving your heart.”
Born in Georgia and raised in Florida, Mary Taylor always knew she was destined to sing. Watching her mother sing in church as the lead vocalist surrounded her with the sound of gospel. Mary started her career singing in the Mount Calvary Baptist Church choir in Riviera, Florida, but was soon performing underage gigs in nightclubs. “I was singing in clubs when I was 14. My dad said that I was too young and that I shouldn’t be in clubs. I kept doing it so much that he finally told me to go find the manager and bring him to the house. He sat down and signed a release for me to do it and told the manager ‘if anything happens to my daughter, you’re dead.’ So I had a chaperone and I went out touring the chitlin’ circuit clubs in Florida and the Carolinas.”
Grown up and relocated in Connecticut, Mary Taylor began to sing her brand of blues in the northeast. Hartford’s soul queen was soon to become the world’s “angel of soul.” The London based blues label, JSP Records, discovered her extraordinary talent and her debut album Victim of Love was released with rave reviews. Mary started on the road and amazed audiences from all over the United States to Europe.
Those years of singing the blues provided the foundation for the soulful, gospel vocalist Mary is today. She always inspires audiences with her gifted voice. Mary’s credits include appearances with gospel greats Vickie Winans, Bobby Jones, Shirley Caesar, Edwin Hawkins, the Connecticut Mass Choir, the Los Angeles Mass Choir, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and many more.
